Bruins Take One-Stroke Lead after Opening Day

Four UCLA players shot par or better Friday to vault the top-ranked Bruins into first place after the opening round at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto.

Led by senior Tiffany Joh, the Bruins posted a seven-under par score of 277 and led runnerup Oklahoma State (278) by one shot. USC and Stanford were tied for third place at 279 (-5), followed by Arizona State, Arkansas and New Mexico in a tie for fifth at two-under 282.

Joh posted an opening round score of 68 (-3) and was tied for third with four other players. She made three birdies and 15 pars on the day.

Sophomore Glory Yang and freshman Stephanie Kono each posted scores of 69 (-2) and were tied for seventh place. Yang bogeyed the first hole then played the rest of the round in three-under par. Kono was three-under through 17, but bogeyed the 18th.

Junior Sydnee Michaels was tied for 26th at even par 71 and sophomore Maria Jose Uribe was tied for 53rd at three-over par 74.

Senior Ryann O'Toole and freshman Brianna Do played as individuals. O'Toole was tied for 34th after posting a 72 (+1) and Do was tied for 48th after carding a 73 (+2).

Oklahoma State's Caroline Masson took the first round lead with an opening round 65 (-7).
