Cardinal Rolls Through Opening Day Of ITA Northwest Regionals

STANFORD, Calif.- Six Stanford singles players and two doubles teams advanced on the opening day of competition at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The top seed in this year's draw, Barte defeated California's Marion Ravelojaona 6-4, 6-0 following a first-round bye. Burdette, seeded eighth, outlasted Santa Clara's Kacie Wagner 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 after her first-round bye. McVeigh, the No. 12 seed, dropped just five games overall with wins over Santa Clara's Kelly Buckley (6-2, 6-0) and Clara Schuhmacher (6-2, 6-1).
Clayton and Li had impressive debuts on their home court as well. Clayton cruised past Santa Clara's Stephanie Galainena 6-1, 6-1 before pounding Claire Soper of Saint Mary's 6-4, 6-1. Li was even better, dropping only three games in victories over Gonzaga's Sophie Lantta (6-0, 6-0) and Washington's Vanja Radunovic (6-0, 6-3).
Yen topped Molly Aloia of Saint Mary's 6-1, 6-2 and followed that with a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4 victory over Washington's Joyce Ardies.
Freshman Logan Hansen was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 by Washington State's Ekaterina Kamendova in her opening round match.
In doubles action, both seeded Cardinal teams picked up victories following first-round byes. The sixth-seeded pairing of Burdette and McVeigh defeated Nevada's Shannon Cassidy and Katarina Huba 8-1, while the seventh-seeded duo of Barte and Li downed Pacific's Sarah Fisher and Jolanta Twarowska 8-3.
Hansen and Yen lost to Washington's Venise Chan and Denise Dy 8-4 in the first round.
Doubles play begins on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. while singles resumes at 1 p.m. A consolation singles bracket will also be contested.
