Tiara Pittman's Late Goal Lifts Cougar Soccer Past California

Oct. 17, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Tiara Pittman's goal with just over a minute left in regulation provided No. 24 Washington State a 2-1 victory over No. 13 California in Pacific-10 women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

Pittman, a native of Spokane, tallied the game-winner at 88:49 after junior Kiersten Dallstream created a turnover and fed the ball the Cougar newcomer at the top of the box.

With the victory, Washington State (7-3-4, 1-1-1 Pac-10) posted victories in consecutive conference matches at home against a ranked team for the first time since 2004. The Cougars knocked off fourth-ranked USC in the final match of the 2007 season. It ended an eight match Pac-10 winning streak for California (9-4-0, 2-1-0 Pac-10) and a six-match conference road winning streak for the Golden Bears. It was also the third-straight time a ranked California team has left Pullman with a loss.

'It was a hard fought match between two teams that did not want to back down from each other,' Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'It was extremely even for 90 minutes and when we got half a chance we were able to take advantage of it.'

The win was the 52nd of Potter's career at Washington State tying Lisa Fraser (1989-92) for the school record as a head coach. A dozen of those victories have been against ranked opponents. The crowd of 738 is the fifth-largest at home in school history and the most to witness a Cougar victory in Pullman.

Washington State took a 1-0 lead at 17:39 on Dallstream's fourth goal of the season. The Fountain Hills, Ariz., native beat California goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini in the box after taking a feed from junior Carly Dobratz. The assist was the 12th of Dobratz's career and moved her into a tie for eighth all-time at WSU.

At 58:08, California tied the score on Valerie Barnes's first goal of the season. After Cougar goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee stopped a blast by Alex Morgan, Barnes was there to put the rebound in the open net and knot the game 1-1.

The Cougars will host No. 2 Stanford, Sunday at noon.
