PALO ALTO, Calif. - An exhaustive day one has concluded at the ITA West-North Regionals hosted by Stanford, and sophomore Venise Chan led the way for the Huskies, reaching the third round in both singles and doubles with freshman partner Denise Dy.

The four-day tournament features many of the top players on the west coast, including representatives from Stanford, California, Oregon, and Washington State. The singles finalists and doubles champions earn automatic entry into the ITA National Indoor Championships, held in November.

Chan, the seventh-seed in the 120-player singles field, received a first round bye, then cruised past Cal Poly's Diane Filip, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. In the doubles draw, Chan and Dy defeated Logan Hansen and Jennifer Yen of Stanford, 8-4. In the second round, they dominated Nevada's Bailly and Ogata, 8-0.

Joining Chan and Dy in the third round of doubles is junior Aleksandra Malovic and freshman Samantha Smith, who defeated consecutive Pac-10 opponents. First up, they scored an 8-2 win over Cal's Chang and Visico. In the second round, the Huskies downed two rival Cougars--Ekaterina Kamendova and Ioana Oprea--by an 8-5 score.

Five Huskies earned first round victories in the singles draw, and a sixth advanced via walkover. However, UW's six first round winners were each ousted in their second match, despite several close calls. Four of the matches went to third sets, with three losses coming to seeded players.

One of the day's top showings was turned in by Dy. After an easy 6-0, 6-1 first round win over Nevada's Lais Ogata, Dy took veteran Golden Bear and No. 11-seed Bojana Bobusic to the brink. Bobusic took the first set in a tiebreak, before Dy responded with a tiebreak win of her own in the second set. The more experienced Bobusic managed to go up a break in the third, however, and closed out a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-3 win.

Junior Joyce Ardies also forced a third-set in her second round match with Stanford's Jennifer Yen, but the Cardinal hung on for a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4 victory. Junior Aleksandra Malovic met 13-seed Jana Juricova of Cal in the second round, with Juricova scoring the 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-2 win. Sophomore Lina Xu won her first set but lost the next two against 15th-seeded Caroline Bailly of Nevada.

Play continues at Stanford through Monday.
