The Bruin men's cross country team had one of their best team performances in recent years on Saturday at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, IN as Laef Barnes led UCLA to a fifth-place showing.

'I think our men continue to make progress and we feel that we are growing into a very strong, nationally competitive team,' said head coach Eric Peterson. 'Obviously our sites right now are set on the Pac-10 meet in two weeks, and of course then the West Region. We have two teams in front of us that have beaten us this season in Oregon and Stanford. The guys are coming away from this race excited and happy, but not satisfied. We are really fired up that we are going in the right direction, but we aren't where we need to be. That will be the attitude we take moving into the post-season.

Barnes was the No. 1 runner for the Bruins, finishing 14th in a very competitive race with a time of 23:49.4. Senior Drew Shackleton was 29th (24:10.1) and junior Marlon Patterson was 40th with a run of 24:19.7. Rounding out the top five runners were sophomore Kent Morikawa (52nd, 24:26.1) and senior Mike Haddan (61st, 24:32.7).

'Laef ran very, very strong today. He put himself in the lead pack of runners like he did two weeks ago in Oregon and manage the race much better then he did in there. Drew ran a very solid race. He's so consistent anyway, but now he's becoming consistently better the he was before.

'Marlon, Kent and Mike ran very, very good second half races. They came from behind and packed it in well. We have to work on our three through seventh position runners. We need to improve on running more aggressively early on. Marlon did that today and he might feel it didn't pay off today, but in my opinion it was a good risk. He's the guy that doesn't typically make an aggressive move and it was good to see today.'

The Bruins will use the next two weeks to prepare for the Pac-10 Championships, which are held in Eugene, OR on October 31st.
