Oct. 18, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's tennis team completed the second day at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Northwest Championships in impressive style by placing four Golden Bears into the singles quarterfinal round. Two doubles teams also advanced to the quarterfinal as the sun set on day two at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif.

With round of 16 doubles play kicking off the day, the Bears enjoyed early success as freshman Jana Juricova and senior Marion Ravelojaona teamed up to take out Florence De Vrye and Caroline Stevens of Nevada, 8-5. The third-seeded duo of No. 24-ranked senior Claire Ilcinkas and sophomore Marina Cossou got an 8-5 victory against Cal Poly's Diane Filip and Suzie Matzenauer. Senior Bojana Bobusic and sophomore Rachael Dillon weren't so fortunate, falling in an 8-5 defeat at the hands of Stanford's Hilary Barte and Veronica Li. Cossou and Ilcinkas will face Denise Dy and Venise Chan of Washington in the quarterfinal while Juricova and Ravelojaona take on Cal Poly's fourth-seeded duo of Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong.

In singles play, the Bears went 8-1 overall as four players each won two matches. No. 7-ranked Cossou took the 6-1, 6-1, win over Maria Malec of Cal Poly in the round of 32 before taking out No. 91 Caroline Bailly of Nevada, 6-1, 6-1.
