UCLA Women's Basketball Holds First Official Practice

Oct. 18, 2008

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team officially kicked off the 2008-09 season with its first official practice on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion. The practice was the first for head coach Nikki Caldwell, who was hired in April as the fifth women's basketball coach in UCLA history.

Caldwell, who had previously served as an assistant coach for 10 years at Tennessee and Virginia, has a talented group of returning players in Westwood. The Bruins are led by four returning starters in 2007-08 team co-captain Erica Tukiainen, first-team Pac-10 All-Freshman and honorable mention All-Pac-10 honoree Doreena Campbell, Pac-10 All-Freshman and All-Defensive player Nina Earl, and Moniquee Alexander. Also back for UCLA are Pac-10 All-Defensive selection Tierra Henderson and Pac-10 All-Freshman honoree Darxia Morris.

New to the team are 2008 CIF-SS Players of the Year Atonye Nyingifa (Redondo Union HS) and Rebekah Gardner (Ayala HS).

UCLA opens the season with a Nov. 2 exhibition against Love and Basketball at 2 pm in Pauley Pavilion.
