Women's Tennis Enjoys First Day Success at ITA Northwest Championships

Oct. 18, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's tennis team completed the first day of play at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Championships with five Golden Bears headed to the round of 32 in singles play and three doubles teams advancing to the round of 16. The four-day tournament held on the courts of the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. showcases the top players from the ITA Northwest Region.

As the second seed in the singles bracket, No. 7-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou got a first-round bye before dispatching of Washington State's Ekaterina Kamendova in a 6-3, 6-3 win. No. 22-ranked senior Claire Ilcinkas also got a first-round bye as the sixth seed and later claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jessica Gomez, another Cougar. As the 11th seed, No. 65-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic rested up during her bye but needed every point in a three-setter against Denise Dy of Washington. Bobusic won her first set tiebreaker, 7-3, but lost the second- set breaker, 7-5. She broke Dy's serve twice to get the third 6-3 to advance.

Fresh off a singles crown at the St. Mary's Invitational, freshman Jana Juricova came out of the gates with a 6-0, 6-1, win against Sacramento State's Milica Zivanovic but stumbled in the second set of her round of 64 match against Washington's Aleksandra Malovic. After claiming the first, 6-1, Juricova lost the tiebreaker in the second set, 7-3, before winning the third set 6-2. Fellow frosh Stephany Chang dropped just four games today as she wiped out San Jose State's Anna Guzman, 6-1, 6-1, and then made short work of Eastern Washington's Amanda Mankovits, 6-0, 6-2.

Senior Marion Ravelojaona won the blue flight title at the Cal Nike Invitational earlier this fall but ran into trouble in the second round today as she faced the top-seeded player in the tournament, No. 4-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford. Ravelojaona got a 6-4, 6-2 win over Samantha Smith of Washington in the first round but fell in a 6-4, 6-0, loss to Barte in the second. Sophomore Rachael Dillon also got a first round win (6-1, 3-6, 6-1 over Marina Nicholas of Washington State) but lost in the second round to the 10th seed, No. 62-ranked Jennifer Heinser of San Francisco, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Catalina Visico did not survive the first round, falling in a 6-0, 6-1, loss to Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State.

In doubles play, the two Cal duos that received first-round byes turned the rest into a second-round victory to advance to the round of 16. Third-seeded No. 24-ranked Cossou and Ilcinkas put an 8-0 win in the books over Megan Sporndli and Stephanie Fuchs of Portland while eighth-seeded Juricova and Ravelojaona got an 8-3 victory against Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremeta of Oregon. Bobusic and Dillon needed two wins to advance to the round of 16, first defeating Santa Clara's Ashley Pane and Stephanie Galainena, 8-3, and then taking an 8-2 win over Kerri Kummer and Anna Guzman from San Jose State. Chang and Visico couldn't make it out of the first round, falling to Aleksandra Malovic and Samantah Smith of Washington in an 8-2 decision.

Play continues with 8 a.m. doubles tomorrow (Oct. 18) and singles at 1 p.m. A singles consolation bracket will also be played out. For complete information and draws, please visit www.GoStanford.com and point your browser to the women's tennis page.
