No. 2 Women's Basketball Opens Practice Friday

BERKELEY - The No. 2 preseason ranked California women's basketball team held its first practice of the 2008-09 season on Friday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears entertain Chico State and Vanguard in exhibition play on Nov. 5 and Nov. 9, respectively, before opening the season Nov. 14 against Albany.

Last season, the Golden Bears earned their third consecutive NCAA Tournament selection for the first time in school history. Led by first-team All-Pac-10 choices Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton, Cal returns all five starters from the team that finished the 2007-08 campaign at a 27-7 overall clip, a new school record for wins in a season.

Walker and Hampton were recently named to the 2008-09 preseason 'Wade Watch' list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year award.

Walker was widely recognized for her performance last season, including State Farm/WBCA Region 8 All-American, honorable mention Associated Press All-American (second time), first-team All-Pac-10 (second time) and first-team Pac-10 All-Defensive. Additionally, she led the Bears in scoring (15.3 ppg, 3rd Pac-10), rebounding (9.3 rpg, 1st Pac-10), blocks (1.4 bpg, 3rd Pac-10) and free throw percentage (78.1%, 5th Pac-10) and was second in field goal percentage (51.4%, 4th Pac-10) and steals (1.2 spg).

Following the 2007-08 season, Hampton was chosen a State Farm/WBCA Region 8 All-American for the second consecutive year and received her second honorable mention coaches' All-America accolade. The Oakland, Calif., native is the only three-time first-team All-Pac-10 choice in school history and a two-time honorable mention Associated Press All-American

The Bears are in their fourth year under head coach Joanne Boyle. She is assisted by assistant coaches Charmin Smith and Kevin Morrison, both of whom are beginning their second season at Cal, and first-year assistant coach Jennifer Hoover.
