Stanford Baseball Family Comes Together on Alumni Day

Oct. 20, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford baseball has long been known as one of the nation's premier programs. On a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond, it was easy to see why as members of the Stanford baseball family past and present came together on the annual Alumni Day to remember past glory, look to future success and - of course - play ball.

The day began with an Old Timer's Game that, befitting a program of such heritage, became an instant classic. Two teams of Stanford greats staged a close contest that was decided on a game-winning, RBI-single off the bat of Rodger Irvine from the class of 1953.

Following the thrilling Old Timer's Game, a group of recent alumni (including 2008 Major League draftees Erik Davis of the San Diego Padres organization and Randy Molina of the Seattle Mariners system) took on the current Stanford club. Inspired by the heroics of the previous game, the Alumni came out swinging and took an early lead. However, fresh off the program's 16th College World Series trip, the current Cardinal came back to win.

Stanford baseball continues to make a mark on the game's highest levels, as shown when John Gall '00 delighted all by bringing his bronze medal he helped Team USA to win this summer at the Beijing Olympics.

Alumni Day was another smashing success, allowing fans, alumni and current Stanford players and coaches alike a chance to relive many great moments while building an eager anticipation for the 2009 season. Everyone in the Stanford baseball family looks forward to Friday, February 20, 2009, when the Cardinal hosts Vanderbilt on Opening Night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond!
