Oct. 24, 2008

The No. 16 UCLA swimming and diving team will open up the 2008-09 season on Saturday as they host the University of San Diego. The diving portion of the meet will begin at 11:00 am at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, while the swimming will be contested at the Men's Gym Pool at noon.

The Bruins hold a 11-0 all-time record over the Toreros and will look to tack on another win on Saturday after an impressive fall season of training. UCLA is filled with seniors, sophomores and freshmen, combining experience and young, enthusiastic talent into a team that hopes to make an impression in the pool.

UCLA has eight seniors taking to the UCLA pools for their final season - Kristen Fischer, Erin Frizzell, Anna Poteete, Madeleine Stanton, Brittany Hill, Shannon Pirozzi, Marisa Samaniego and Tess Schofield.

The sophomore class includes Brittany Beauchan, Emily Bibb, Lauren Hall, Carly Lyons, Dani Milligan, Alex Sullivan, Sam Vanden Berge, Morgan Erpenbeck and Laura Winn.

Nine freshmen will be competing in the blue and gold of UCLA for the first time in their careers - Bianca Casciari, Madison Fitzgerald, Yasi Jahanshahi, Jennifer Lamb, Kelsey Louden, Alyssa Robinson, Annie Stefanec, Paige Treleven and Isabel Williams. Redshirt freshman Lindsay Buchbinder also returns after missing last season due to injury.

Rounding out the Bruin team are the juniors - Kirsten Byers, Isabell Fischer, and Alexandra Nalevanko.

Head coach Cyndi Gallagher is in her 21st season with the Bruins, while dive coach Tom Stebbins begins his 11th year. Assistant swim coach Erika Hansen Stebbins is in her fourth year at UCLA.

This weekend's meet will be the first of several dual meets in the coming weeks. UCLA will host Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara on November 7, while Arizona State and Arizona will visit Westwood November 14 and 15.
