USC Takes SMU Classic
Oct. 25, 2008
Senior Rebecca Soni won two events and the USC women's swimming team touched first in six of eight races to win the two-day SMU Women's Swimming and Diving Classic on Saturday (Oct. 25) in Joe Perkins Natatorium in Dallas.
In the uniquely formatted and scored meet, each team placed two swimmers in each event, one slated for an `A' final and one for a `B' final.
USC, competing without a diver, took first with 327 points and was followed by North Carolina and SMU, who tied at 301, Wisconsin (258), Alabama (232) and Arizona State (227).
Troy opened the meet with a win in the 400y free relay as seniors Kristen Lahey, Rachael Waller and Katy Houston and freshman Katinka Hosszu won in an NCAA `B' consideration time of 3:21.49, better than any Trojan time last season.
Hosszu came back in the next race to win the 500y free in 4:47.67, setting a meet record with an NCAA `B' cut. Her time would have been good for third fastest for USC all of last season.
In the next event, Lahey won the 200y back in an NCAA `B' time of 1:57.77, more than a second-and-a-half ahead of the second-place finisher. It also bettered her time for all of last season.
Soni, the three-time defending NCAA champion in the 200y breast, won her specialty in an NCAA `A' cut of 2:09.12. Even for Soni, the NCAA record holder in the event, the fast time was noteworthy at such an early point in the season. The next closest finisher was more than six seconds behind her. Houston won the `B' final in 2:14.17, an NCAA `B' cut.
Freshman Tanya Krisman won her specialty, the 200y fly, in 1:56.71, an NCAA `B' cut, by more than four seconds. Hosszu won the `B' final in 1:59.13, also an NCAA `B' cut and a time that would've been good for second in the `A' final.
Soni came back to win the 200y IM in 2:00.64 while freshman Ania Kowalczyk won the `B' final in 2:02.41. Both were NCAA `B' cut times.
USC closed the meet with a third in the 200y free relay. Lahey, Houston, junior Krissy Forelli and Waller finished in 1:33.67.
