Jesolva and Morgan Compete with U20 National Team

Oct. 26, 2008

BERKELEY - Cal women's soccer sophomores defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva and forward Alex Morgan joined the U.S. Under-20 National team last week in Portland for friendly games against Canada. Morgan had been actively involved with the team since April while Jesolva was recently called up for her first trip with the squad. Cal freshman forward Katrin Omarsdottir is also currently competing with the Icelandic national team.

'Everyone's happy for Megan, Alex and Katrin,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. 'Anytime you can represent your country and play with extremely talented players, it's a great opportunity. It reflects positively on Cal as well. I thought Megan and Alex fit in well with the team against Arizona after missing the ASU game.'

The U.S. and Canada tied 1-1 on Thursday and the Americans won Saturday's match, 1-0. Morgan played in both games while Jesolva participated in Saturday's victory.

Jesolva leads the Bears with eight assists in 2008. As a freshman, she was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team and picked as Cal's Freshman of the Year. She was also made the Freshman A--American second team and All-West Regional second team by Soccer Buzz.

'It was crazy because it was so last minute but I couldn't turn it down,' Jesolva said. 'I went in with the mindset to give it my all because it was my only change to prove myself. I gave my best.'

Morgan has a team-high nine goals this season, including a goal in the 2-0 win over Arizona on Oct. 26. A second-team Soccer Buzz freshman All-American, Morgan led Cal in points (18) and goals (8) in 2007. The Diamond Bar, Calif., product tallied three game-winning goals on her way to honorable mention all-conference recognition and Pac-10 All-Freshman accolades. Morgan also was named third-team All-West by Soccer Buzz and second-team All-Freshman by Soccer America.

The U.S. played two friendly games against Canada on Oct. 23 and Oct. 25. The games were the team's final international matches before the first game of the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup against Group B opponent France on November 19.
