Alvarez In Fifth After Day 1
Oct. 27, 2008
BOULDER CREEK, Nevada -- The Huskies shot a combined 2-under 286 during the first day of competition at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday, marking the UW women's first team round under par in the 2008-'09 season.
Leading the way for the Dawgs was sophomore Anya Alvarez, who posted a score of 4-under (68), which included an eagle on the par-5 16th hole at Boulder Creek Golf Course.
'This course is perfect for Anya's length,' said UW coach Mary Lou Mulflur about Alvarez's ability to drive the ball. 'The course is set up short and she is able to put herself in great opportunities to post low numbers.'
And so has the rest of the team, which remains around even-par. Following Alvarez for the Huskies Karinn Dickinson (E), Molly Aronsson (+1), Christina Yoon (+1) and Molly Boyle (+4). Leading the tournament is Long Beach State's Lee Lopez at 8-under, while the team leader is Louisville at 8-under. Both Alvarez and the Husky team are within striking distance over the next two days of competition as long as they can continue to post numbers below par, which is something Mulflur said requires a different kind of mentality.
'We can't be in a mindset where we're 2-under and now it's like 'What do we do now?'' she said. 'Instead of looking to maintain our score, we have to take risks and find ways of getting to 3-under and 4-under. That's what Anya was able to do today really well.'
The Huskies resume play at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, starting with Boyle and continuing in eight-minute intervals until Alvarez tees at 8:02. The Huskies will be playing in threesomes with Texas and Idaho. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
