UCLA Women's Golf Program to Host Bruin 18 Classic

Oct. 31, 2008

The top-ranked UCLA women's golf program will host its first fundraiser at the Malibu Country Club on Mon., Nov. 10. Competition begins with a noon shotgun.

'We are very excited to be hosting the Bruin 19 Classic, our inaugural fund-raising tournament,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'The Bruin 18 is the dedicated support group for UCLA women's golf. Our event will be the platform for introducing more members of the UCLA community into this elite group.

'It is my belief,' she continued, 'that once people in the UCLA community have the chance to meet our players and spend a fun afternoon on the links, they will truly appreciate the character and amazing talent of our Bruin golfers.'

Format for the tournament is a four-player team scramble and entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, boxed lunch, on-course snacks and drinks, plus a buffet dinner, tee prizes and mulligans. Also, participants will be eligible to compete in the Beat the Bruin Par 3 Challenge.

In addition, many silent auction items featuring UCLA gear, golf packages and more will be available for bidding.

'We plan on making this an annual event,' said Forsyth. 'It will be something that Bruin golf fans can look forward to participating in every year.'

The Bruins have won all three of their tournaments this season, rising to a consensus No.1 ranking in all polls. Six Bruin players are ranked among the nation's Top 50: junior Sydnee Michaels (8th), senior Tiffany Joh (18th), sophomore Glory Yang (26th), freshman Stephanie Kono (28th), senior Ryann O'Toole (48th) and sophomore Maria Jose Uribe (50th). Each of these players and the remainder of the roster will be involved in the Bruin 18 Classic.

In other news, all of the aforementioned players except O'Toole will be participating in the Collegiate Match Play Championship, Nov. 2-4, at the Ginn Resort in Orlando, Fla. Senior Maiya Tanaka will be making her first appearance of the season, replacing O'Toole, who has a Futures Tour Qualifying event next week.
