Bruins Remain Perfect in Pac-10 With 3-0 Victory over Cal

Nov. 2, 2008

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's soccer team moved one step closer to claiming the school's sixth straight Pac-10 Championship on Sunday, as the third-ranked Bruins recorded a 3-0 victory over Cal in its final home match of the regular season at Drake Stadium. UCLA (16-0-2; 7-0 Pac-10) can guarantee itself at least a share of this year's title with a win in either of its final two matches next week in Oregon.

The Bruins were held scoreless for the first 70 minutes Sunday before breaking out for three second-half goals. Senior McCall Zerboni put in what proved to be the game winner at the 70:24 mark on a low-liner from the top of the box. Christina DiMartino and Sydney Leroux were credited with the assists on that goal.

UCLA would score again a little more than eight minutes later, as forward Kara Lang punched in her fourth goal of the season on a 24-yard blast from right side to the upper-left corner. Defender Lauren Wilmoth capped the scoring for the Bruins at the 85:46 mark on a goal nearly identical to Lang's. Wilmoth got free on the right side before scoring high to the far post. Catherine Calvert and Kristina Larsen assisted on that goal.

The Bruin defense notched its 15th shutout of the season on Sunday. UCLA goalkeeper Ashley Thompson made three saves, as the Bruins outshot the Bears, 26-6. UCLA has now outscored its opponents 43-3 this season.

Sunday was Senior Day for seven Bruins who were playing in their final regular season home match. Zerboni, DiMartino, Thompson, Calvert, Coco Kleinert, Caitlyn Mac Kechnie and Erin Hardy were all honored prior to the start of the match. The Bruins' senior class has put up some impressive numbers during their time in Westwood, helping UCLA to a 65-8-6 overall record. The seven seniors have also won the Pac-10 and played in the NCAA College Cup every season. They have lost just one conference match, posting a 31-1-2 mark in Pac-10 play.

In the other Pac-10 match of the day in Los Angeles, Stanford posted a 3-1 victory over USC. A win by the Women of Troy would've given the Bruins at least a share of the title heading into the final weekend of play. Instead, UCLA can earn it with a win over Oregon State on Friday in Corvallis.
