No. 10 Huskies Fifth After Day 1

Nov. 3, 2008

SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- The 10th-ranked UW men's golf team finished the first day of the CordeValle Collegiate in fifth place, shooting a collective 372 (+12) on Monday.

Husky juniors Nick Taylor (-1, 71, 6th) and Richard Lee (E, 72, 10th), UW's top players, recorded scores low enough to be in the top 10 with two days left of golf. Following the Dawgs' top two players were Chris Killmer (+3, 75, 30th), Kevin Spooner (+5, 77, 42nd) Darren Wallace (+5, 77, 42nd) and Tze Huang Choo (+6, 78, 50th). Playing as an individual, senior John Wise is in 50th place with a 6-over, 78.

'It was an OK day for us,' said UW coach Matt Thurmond. 'We didn't finish well, and USC had a strong round so that puts us in a hole, but we're still in position to get out of it.'

Leading the tournament after one day is No. 4 USC at 3-under. The Trojans were the only team to shoot a negative number, led by first round front-runner Matthew Giles (69, -3). Between the Huskies and the Trojans are Charlotte (+7), No. 11 Stanford (+10) and No. 6 Arkansas (+10).

'The course was playing very tough,' Thurmond said. 'We got the toughest parts of the course at the hardest times, when the wind was blowing and the conditions were the worst.'

Thurmond remains confident his team can climb the standings in the next two days, given its penchant start strong and end stronger thus far this fall. In the last round of three tournaments so far this year, the Huskies are 35-1. Live scoring of round two will available at

Tee Times begin at 8 a.m. with the Huskies starting at 8:36 a.m.
