Arizona Finishes Ninth in CordeValle Collegiate

Nov. 5, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona finished their fall season by putting together their best round in the third round of the CordeValle Collegiate in the third round of the event on Wednesday. The Wildcats’ 373 on day three gave them a total of 1140 strokes, ninth best in the event.

USC, who lead the tournament from day one, continued their domination of the field, winning by a margin of 26 strokes over second place Stanford. Host UCLA started the day in sixth, but scored a round of 359 to finish in third.

The top six individual finishers were all from the Pac-10, lead by Washington’s Nick Taylor and USC’s Tim Slutier who tied for first at four under par. Slutier had at least a share of the lead at the end of each round. Of the five top finishers, three of them were Trojans. Arizona was lead by Tarquin MacManus and Jonathan Khan. They each were nine over for the tournament.

The tournament, played at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif., a par 72, 7,169 yard course, requires each team to play six golfers with the top five scores recorded each day. MacManus and Khan finished tied for 28th in event. This is the third event in a row that MacManus has had at least a share of the best score for the Wildcats. Roberto Galleti, who shot a 70 in the second round to put him in a tie for 29th, shot a round of 80 to fall to 51st. His round was not counted in Arizona’s round three total. Philip Bagdade moved up a spot to finish 55th in the tournament. Tyler Neal and Bradley Nicholson were 21 over and finished tied for 69th.

Arizona had a shaky fall season, with the highlight being a second place finish in the Wolf Pack Classic. Tarquin MacManus was a consistent competitor for the Cats, concluding the fall season with a top ten finish, and a team best low round of 64. Arizona will look to improve in the Spring. Their next event will be in Tucson, as they host the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate Feb. 2-3.
