BERKELEY - The No. 9/9 California women's basketball team defeated visiting Chico State 95-51 in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion. Junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson led the Bears with 17 points. Cal will next play host to Vanguard on Nov. 9 in an exhibition that is free to the public.

'I think we shot the ball pretty well,' Cal head coach Joanne Boyle said. 'I was pretty happy with that. I think we finally started to challenge them on defense in the second half, played a little more physical. There were definitely some good things, and a lot more things we need to work on.'

The Wildcats, the 2007-08 CCAA Champions, kept things competitive for the first seven minutes, trailing just 15-7. California went on a 22-6 run, opening up a 37-13 lead. The hot-shooting Bears made eight consecutive baskets in that span, shooting 76.2 percent from the field through the 7:41 mark.

The Bears missed their final seven field goal attempts of the half, but still went into the break holding a 47-30 advantage. Cal opened up the second half with a 14-2 run, going up 61-32, putting the game well out of reach of the Wildcats. The Bears held on for a 95-51 victory.

All five of Cal's starters posted double-digits in the scoring column. Gray-Lawson led the Bears with 17 points, shooting 70 percent from the field. Senior forward Ashley Walker posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Walker also had five of the Bears' 16 steals. Sophomore forward Kelsey Adrian scored 16 points with eight boards. Freshman guard Casey Morris, in her first game in front of a Cal crowd, scored nine points on 3-5 shooting. She also had a pair of assists and steals.

'It's good to get a game under our belt. We've been practicing pretty hard for the last couple of weeks,' Boyle said. 'It's nice to play a team that doesn't know you, it forces you to work on stuff.'

The Bears will play their final exhibition game Sunday, November 9 when they host the reigning NAIA National Champions, Vanguard, at 2 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. Admission is free to the Vanguard game. California opens its regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 when they host Albany at Haas Pavilion.
