Nov. 13, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's basketball team was announced Thursday as the team voted to win the Pac-10 regular-season title, according to a poll of Pac-10 women's basketball media members. The Cardinal also boasts two players, junior center Jayne Appel and sophomore forward Kayla Pedersen, that were named to the Preseason All-Pac-10 Team.
Stanford opens the 2008-09 season Friday night, hosting the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a 7 p.m. contest at Maples Pavilion.
The eight-time defending conference champion Cardinal earned all but one of the 14 first-place votes in the poll, accumulating 139 total points. California earned the other first-place vote and tallied 126 points to take second in the poll.
Appel and Pedersen were named to the post-dominated Preseason All-Pac-10 Team, joined by California's Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton as well as Arizona State's Briann January. Last season Appel was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team while Pedersen took home Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors.
Arizona State was picked third by the media with 112 points, with USC (94) and UCLA (85) rounding out the top five, respectively. Oregon, with 64 points, was picked to finish sixth and Washington amassed 56 points for seventh in the poll, followed by Oregon State (51), Arizona (26) and Washington State (21).
Stanford will also defend its Pac-10 Tournament title from March 12-15 at the Galen Center on the campus of USC. The Cardinal has won the conference tournament on five of the seven occasions in which it has been held.
