Swimming and Diving Heads to L.A. to Open Pac-10 Season
Nov. 13, 2008
Swimming and diving will head to Los Angeles this weekend. The men (0-0) will open their season against USC while the women (0-2) look for their first win of the season UCLA Bruins in their Pac-10 opener. The women will then compete against USC on Saturday as the men take part in the USC Invite.
Last Time Against the L.A. Schools:
The ASU women topped USC last season 158-141. They fell 160-140 to the Bruins last season in Tempe. While the men lost to USC by one point during the regular season, they finished ahead of them at last year's Pac-10 Championships.
The Kids Are Alright:
The newcomers to the ASU women's team have already made an immediate impact. Led by Jordyn Green, Sasha Stephens and Penelope Yamauchi, the freshmen class has already put up strong times and have scored numerous points. Sasha Stephens won both the 100 and 200 back against the Kansas Jayhawks and the 200 back again at SMU. Yamauchi took first in the 200 IM against both Kansas and SMU. She also won the 200 breast against Kansas. Green won the 200 breast while competing against SMU and placed second behind Yamauchi in the event against Kansas.
Back for More
The men's diving team returns All-American Micky Benedetti. Benedetti, who earned All-American honors on the 1-meter and honorable mention accolades on the 3-meter and platform, comes back for his final season as a Sun Devil. The native of Rome, Italy, won all three diving events at last year's Pac-10 Championships, making him the first Sun Devil to do so.
The Sun Devils return two All-Americans from last season. Jen Beckberger and Jess Perazzo were each honored last season with honorable mention All-American accolades for their contributions to relays.
Ashton at it Again!
After qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season as an individual, Aubry looks to pick up right where she left off last season. The junior from Leawood, Kan., got off to a solid start to her junior season as she won both the 100 and 200 fly against Kansas and again at the intersquad meet, putting up impressive early season times in the process. Aubry also took first in the 200 fly in a dual against SMU and placed second in the 100 fly at the SMU Classic.
The swimmers head to Austin, Texas for the prestigious Texas Invite December 4-6. The divers will compete at the OSU invite in Columbus, Ohio. The event will begin December 5 and last through December 7.
