Men's Hoops Players Quotes From Weekly Press Conference

Nov. 17, 2008

Jamelle McMillan

On last Friday's game against Mississippi Valley State:
' We did a lot of good things, definitely some areas we need to improve on. We gave up 5 offense rebounds to start out the game and that continued throughout the night, so obviously something needs to be cleaned up. Overall, for the first night out, we felt a little more confident than we did last year, guys played more freely than they did last year the first time out. Obviously there is a lot of work to be done, but we look forward to getting better in those areas.'

On playing their first road game of the season Tuesday:
'I know what to expect. It's just a game of basketball, that's all it is. Try to take it one game at a time. They're a pretty good team and they did a lot of good things last season. Supposedly the whole team is back so we know it's going to be tough, but we feel we're tough as well. With the stuff we have in and the way were feeling and playing, we should be ok going on the road for the first time.'

On rebounding last game:
'They sent five guys, we sent two or three. That was the main thing; size had nothing to do with it. I think it was a combination of effort and them being more desperate because they were a little bit undersized. We couldn't find bodies to put on people and it will cost us against better teams.'

On their remarkable ball movement last game:
'I think so. The guys shot the ball well. James was James; he was what to be expected. Ty played really well for us, actually led the team in rebounds. Jeff, down low, was Jeff, and Rihards knocked down some shots. You saw a variety of things from a lot of different guys. I think that's because we have improved practice wise. Our practice habits have been a lot better the past couple weeks and guys know this is the real deal. Last year, they felt they could come in and not much was expected of them. Now they know the expectations and what to expect from their teammates and coaches, and they're playing that way. There is no way you can rely on a single guy, even two. It's got to come from all five positions for forty minutes a game.

On their tough road game against Nebraska last season:
'We relied a lot on just a few players early on in the season last year. James and Jeff really carried us, and when they didn't get going, it was hard for the rest of us. This year is going to be a good test.'

On their upcoming road game against San Diego State Tuesday night:
'We've had a great off-season and it will be a great test going to play San Diego State. I don't think were going to put ourselves in holes again this year. We've got a solid nine this year; it definitely will be a tough test. They won 20 plus games last year and they return their whole team, so it's going to be a big road game.'

On some of their problems during last Friday's game against Mississippi Valley State:
'They won the last four minutes fourteen to nine. They made some shots down the stretch that he [coach Sendek] didn't like too much. They kept playing all the way through the wire, which is a credit to them. They never gave up and they made some tough shots down the stretch to cut the lead. We knew when the buzzer sounded that it wasn't our best performance. We knew we were out rebounded, which was a key for us going into the game. They like to call them 50-50 plays, where either of us can get the ball, and they got more of those than we did in the game. That's going to change.'
