Nov. 18, 2008
UCLA junior midfielder Michael Stephens has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for a record third time this season. Stephens was also selected to the National Teams of the Week for Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer after tying the school record with four assists in the Bruins' 6-1 win at San Diego State.
Stephens assisted on the Bruins' first four goals of the game and helped the team record its highest goal output since scoring seven goals in 2002. Stephens now leads UCLA and the Pac-10 in scoring with 23 points and is tied for the lead with nine assists. UCLA, which hosts Cal Poly in an NCAA first round game on Friday, finished the regular season on an eight-game unbeaten streak, outscoring its opponents by an 18-2 count during that streak. The Bruins are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and are unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 games.
Stephens becomes the first Pac-10 men's soccer player ever to earn three weekly honors in the same season. UCLA has totaled 35 players of the week all-time.
