Soni Wins Two USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards

Nov. 17, 2008

On the heels of winning one gold and two silver medals at the 2008 Olympics, USC senior co-captain Rebecca Soni won the Breakout Performer of the Year Award and the Female Performance of the Year Award at the USA Swimming Foundation's Golden Goggle Awards on Monday night in New York City.

Soni, who set the world record en route to winning the Olympic gold in the 200m breast while also earning silver medals in the 100m breast and the 400m medley relay, was in attendance in New York to receive her awards.

USC third-year head coach Dave Salo was also in New York. Salo, whose medal-winning swimmers at the 2008 Olympics included Soni and former USC swimmers Ous Mellouli and Larsen Jensen, was nominated for Coach of the Year, though did not win.

The Golden Goggle Awards, held at the New York Hilton and hosted by Bob Costas, celebrated the accomplishments of 2008 Olympic Swim Team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Soni and Salo were in New York just days after helping the USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams knock off the defending NCAA champion Arizona men's and women's teams last weekend at USC.
