Arizona Set To Host Diving Invitational
Nov. 19, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona swimming and diving program will host its first diving invitational this weekend at the newly remodeled Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Events will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Fifteen teams will be competing in the invitational including UNLV, USC, Wisconsin, Wyoming, New Mexico State, San Diego, San Diego State, Northern Arizona, Cal State Bakersfield, San Jose State, Air Force and Brigham Young. Most of the teams competing, like UA, are ‘zone’ diving teams. There is a high possibility Arizona will face off against many of the same opponents when they qualify for NCAA’s in March.
The format for the invitational will be a championship style meet with a consolation round. The top eight finishers in the preliminaries advance to the finals, while finishers 9-16 will compete in the consolation.
The new state-of-the-art diving structure and pool features two 1-meter and three 3-meter Maxiflex Model “B” springboards on concrete short stands. The structure has platform heights of 3, 5, 7.5, and 10 meters, each with Rough-Tex surfacing. The pool has built-in spray surface agitation and an air-sparging system under all platforms and two of the 3-meter springboards.
Arizona swimming and diving’s next dual meet isn’t until the new year. On Jan. 2, the team will host Oregon State, NAU and Washington. Meanwhile the swimmers will competing in the Texas Invitational from Dec. 4-6.
