No. 18 Cal Men Headed for NCAA Championships

The No. 18 California men's cross country team will make its second consecutive team appearance in the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 24, in Terre Haute, Ind. The first race will be the women's 6,000-meter race at 9:08 a.m. (PT) and will be followed by the men's 10,000-meter race at 12:48 p.m. (PT). The Golden Bear men finished in 16th at the 2007 NCAA Championships, which was the first time the Cal men competed in the national meet as a team in school history.
In the Rankings
The Cal men are currently ranked No. 18 in the nation and No. 5 in the West region, while the Cal women finished ranked No. 12 in the West region.
Last Time Out
The Cal men finished fourth with 116 points Saturday, Nov. 15, at the NCAA Regional Championships, held at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. Senior Yosef Ghebray led the Bears, finishing in seventh overall. The Cal women finished seventh with 269 points.
Ghebray paced the Bears with his time of 28:53. The other top Cal runners were senior Mark Matusak and junior Michael Coe. Coe took 17th, touring the course in 29:34, while Matusak finished close behind in 18th at 29:37. Sophomore Kari Karlsson finished 30th with 29:57, senior Matt Kelly Miller finished 44th with a mark of 30:27 and sophomore Steve Sodaro finished 66th at 31:06 to round out the Cal lineup.
On the women's side, freshman Debra Maier led the Bears by placing 39th in a time of 21:15. Junior Alison Greggor finished 47th at 21:17 to round out the Bears in the top 50.
Ghebray Paces the Bears
Competing in his final competitions at Cal, Yosef Ghebray is going out on top. The native of Union City, Calif., has led the Bears in their most important races of the season. In three of the four races he's participated in this year, Ghebray has been the top finisher for the Bears. All three of those performances were also top-10 finishes. His best time of the year came at the Pac-10 Championships on Oct. 31, when he clocked a time of 23:43 and placed sixth. It was the second time he placed sixth overall in a race (Stanford Invitational - 24:28)
Last Year's NCAA Championships
The Cal men took 16th overall with 434 points at the 2007 NCAA championships at the LaVern Gibson Championships Course. Cal wrapped up its most successful season in its history by finishing second among Pac-10 schools, as top-ranked Oregon won the national title.
Highlighting the Bears' success were David Torrence and Yosef Ghebray. Participating in his final cross country race at Cal, Torrence toured the course in 30:47.7 to take 62nd, while Ghebray finished in 67th, clocking in at 30:53.6.
In the process of taking 16th, Cal also beat two ranked Pac-10 foes, as then-No. 13 Stanford placed 19th and then-No. 30 Arizona State came in 26th.
