Soni, Hosszu Help Women To Husky Invite Win

Led by wins by senior Rebecca Soni, freshman Katinka Hosszu and junior James Martin, the No. 11 USC women's swim team finished first and the No. 22 men's team took second on the final day of the three-day 2008 Husky Invite at the Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., on Saturday (Dec. 6).
USC's women won with 1418 points with host Washington second (1333) and UC Santa Barbara third (1130.5). The men were second with 1315 points behind first-place Cal (144@) and ahead of UCSB (1077.5).
Hosszu, victorious already in both medleys earlier in the meet, won her third event of the weekend, taking the 1650y free in 16:23.07, an NCAA `B' cut. Sophomore Ellie Doran was fourth (16:35.97). Evan Marcus was USC's top finisher on the men's side, finishing ninth (15:52.74).
Martin, who won the 400y IM, took first in the men's 200y back in 1:45.81, less than a second off an NCAA `B' cut,
Senior Rachael Waller was fourth in the 100y free (50.78) while Lahey was eighth (51.14). Freshman Patrick White topped USC's finishers in the men's side with a fifth-place swim of 44.60.
Soni won her specialty, the 200y breast, in a dominating 2:07.69, improving upon her NCAA `A' cut standard she set three weeks ago. Senior Katy Houston was third in 2:13.56, a season-best and NCAA `B' cut while freshman Ella Kidron was fifth in 2:18.45.
In the women's 400y free relay, the quartet of Lahey, Houston, Hosszu and Waller was third in 3:21.29. On the men's side, Grosser, junior Zoltan Povazsay, White and freshman Jeff Daniels also finished third (2:58.74).
