Perez Participating In Mexican National Team Training Camp

Dec. 9, 2008

UW junior Veronica Perez, the Huskies' leading scorer in 2008, has been invited to take part in training camp with the Mexican National Team, December 8-18, in Mexico City.

The San Mateo, Calif., native's mother was born in Mexico making Perez eligible for the team. During the 10-day trip, the team will train mostly in Mexico City before heading north to play local teams in game competition.

'It feels amazing,' Perez said of the opportunity. 'When you work hard for something and an opportunity like things comes to you, you just feel really happy and proud that it's paying off.'

Perez said she first heard of the opportunity when the Huskies played at USC this season where the Women of Troy's assistant coach - also an assistant for Mexico - saw her perform. She was contacted a couple weeks ago and was invited to camp.

Perez, who will be invited to further camps if she performs well, led the Huskies with 13 goals, five assists and 31 points this season, leading UW to a 15-6-1 record its first NCAA appearance since 2004. The Huskies defeated LSU, 3-2, in the First Round before falling to Texas A&M, 3-1, in the Second Round.
