Wildcats Wrap Up Preseason Meet
Dec. 14, 2008
The UA track and field team hosted a preseason intrasquad meet Saturday at Roy P. Drachman stadium, giving the team their first taste of competition as they prepare for the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons.
The team captains took park in a 'draft' of sorts last month to prepare for the meet, and the athletes were in charge of putting together an all-around team capable of scoring enough points across all events to win in-squad bragging rights. The red, white, and blue teams - taking on the colors of their school - saw many athletes running or competing events not typically associated with what they don't normally participate in as strategy was key.
In the end, the White team, led along the way by senior captain Bobby McCoy took the home the glory, squeaking out a victory with 229 total points, just edging out the Blue team who came in second with 219 points. The margin of victory was the different of just one event. The Red team rounded out the squad, not terribly far back with 206 points.
The meet was not filled with many surprises, as most UA athletes dominated their respective events that they will run throughout the season. The lone upset may have been in the women's 60-meter dash as the White team's junior high jumper and NCAA National Champion Liz Patterson took first in a time of 7.70 seconds. Patterson also competed in a variety of different events other than her typical high jump, seeing reps in both the triple jump and javelin throws as she really showed off her flexibility as an all-around athlete.
McCoy led the team to victories in the 150-, 300- and 4 x 300-meter races, taking first in both the individual events before running the third leg in the relay to lead the squad to a victory in that event.
The Wildcats begin the indoor season on January 17 in Flagstaff, Ariz. at the Lumberjack Invitational.
