Sarkisian Announces First Staff Hirings
Dec. 16, 2008
SEATTLE - New Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian announced the hiring of three assistant coaches and a staff member today. Jim Michalczik, Demetrice Martin and Johnny Nansen have been named assistant coaches and Jared Blank has been hired as a director of player personnel.
Michalczik will coach the offensive line and serve as offensive coordinator while Martin will be the defensive secondary coach. Nansen will handle the Huskies' special teams and will also work on the defensive staff. Blank's role will center on administration of the UW's recruiting efforts.
Michalczik, who was born and raised in Port Angeles, Wash., comes to the UW from California, where he was assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. He'd worked on Jeff Tedford's staff at Cal since 2002.
'I've always admired Coach Sarkisian,' Michalczik said. 'The combination of coming to work for him and to work at a great institution like the UW is incredible.'
Prior to his six seasons with the Golden Bears, Michalczik spent three seasons at Oregon State (1999-2001) coaching offensive line, tight ends and special teams. He was also the o-line coach at Montana State from 1992 to 1998 and coached the defensive line at Miami (Fla.) in 1990 and 1991, helping the Hurricanes to a share of the national championship (along with Washington) in 1991.
A 1988 graduate of Washington State, where he earned three letters as an offensive guard, Michalczik is married to the former Jennifer Streatfeild, a Husky volleyball letterwinner from 1990 to 1993.
Nansen also played his college ball at Washington State, graduating in 1997 after earning three letters as a linebacker (1994-96). He comes to the UW after having spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Idaho, where he has been in charge of linebackers, defensive line and special teams.
'This is obviously an opportunity that I couldn't pass up,' Nansen said. 'It's good for my family, and the chance to work with Coach Sarkisian is also great. He's one of the best young coaches around and also a great person.'
Nansen, a product of Long Beach (Calif.) Jordan High School, began his coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Long Beach Cabrillo High in 1998. He was then a graduate assistant at Louisville in 1999 before spending one season at Montana State and three at Idaho State.
Martin just completed a successful season as an assistant at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. As an assistant coach, he helped the Mounties to a 12-2 record and a trip to the state title game.
'I'm looking forward to bringing back the old tradition that the UW had when I was getting recruited to come here,' Martin said. 'I grew up in Pasadena and back then, it was always Washington in the Rose Bowl. We have a great chance to bring that back.'
In 2007, he was a defensive graduate assistant at USC, working with the secondary for the Trojans. A product of Pasadena (Calif.) Muir High School, he was a high school teammate of former Husky cornerback Reggie Reser.
Martin went from Muir to Michigan State, where he played wide receiver and cornerback from 1992 to 1995, earning first-team All-Big Ten in 1994. He went on to play corner for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe and for the Houston Thunderbears in the Arena Football League.
Prior to working on the USC staff, he spent three seasons as the pass defense coordinator at Mt. SAC (when he coached current Husky safety Jason Wells). He was also the secondary coach at Pasadena CC in 2001 and 2002 and began his career in coaching at Monrovia (Calif.) High (1999-2000).
Martin earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., in 2006.
Blank also comes to Washington from USC, where he has been the director of player personnel for the last year and a half. He also served as assistant director of football operations for the Trojans.
A graduate of Lincoln High in Portland, Ore., Blank earned a bachelor's degree in communications from USC in 2005 and added a master's in communications management in 2007.
