Alex Mack Wins Morris Trophy for Second Time

Dec. 17, 2008

BERKELEY - California senior center Alex Mack was named winner of the Morris Trophy as the best offensive lineman in the Pac-10 for the second year in a row Wednesday, becoming just the third player to receive the honor in consecutive seasons.

The Morris Trophy, established in 1980, is a unique award given to the outstanding offensive and defensive linemen in the Pac-10, with the starting offensive linemen in the conference voting for the defensive winner and vice versa. It is truly a players' award.

The only other offensive players to claim the award two straight years were USC's Roy Foster (1980-81) and Washington's Lincoln Kennedy (1991-92). Mack is the third Golden Bear offensive lineman to receive the honor, joining Todd Steussie (1993) and Ryan O'Callaghan (2005). End Andre Carter also won on the defensive side in 2000.

The Morris Trophy adds to the long list of honors bestowed upon Mack this season. On Dec. 9, he was selected as winner of the Draddy Trophy, which is presented to the top football scholar-athlete in the country and includes a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. In addition, he was named to the All-Pac-10 first team for the third straight year, as well as to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team for the second time.

Mack was chosen a first-team All-American by, a second-team All-American by the Sporting News and Walter Camp, and a third-team All-American by the Associated Press. He was also a finalist for the Rimington Trophy (top center) and the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, and a semifinalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award (top lineman).

The Morris Trophy is sponsored by the Morris Family of Woodway, Wash., and the Washington Athletic Club.

Cal will play in a sixth straight bowl game for the first time in program history when the Golden Bears battle Miami in the Emerald Bowl Dec. 27 at San Francisco's AT&T Park. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
