WSU knocked off Hawaii 66-48 in the first of a two-game match-up against the Rainbow Wahine at Stan Sheriff Center.

The victory was the Cougars' fifth straight, the longest WSU streak since 1998. The win also gave the Cougars seven nonconference wins this season, the most since winning nine nonconference games in 1995.

The Cougars found themselves down by as many as 11 points in the first half, but their 3-point shooting brought them back. Senior guard Katie Appleton and freshman guard April Cook each knocked down three first-half 3-pointers, keying the Cougar comeback. The duo combined for 20 of the team's 32 points in the first stanza, and WSU entered intermission with a 32-28 lead.

The second half was all Cougars, as WSU posted a 15-0 run to begin the final period. The Cougars held Hawaii without a point for the first 10-plus minutes of the second half, and the 20 points allowed in the second half was a season-low in any half for the Cougars. The 11-point deficit was the largest overcome since being down by 12 against San Jose State Dec. 16, 2007, and posting a 78-72 overtime victory.

Cook scored a game-high 17 points, while Appleton and freshman guard Jazmine Perkins each chipped in 12. Freshman forward Rosie Tarnowski pulled down a game- and career-high 10 rebounds, the first double-digit rebounding game of her career.

The Cougars and Rainbow Wahine have met five times on the hardwood, with the Cougars notching their first win this past Friday. Each of the four games have also been played on the islands.

Though back-to-back games against the same team is rare, since WSU's first season of women's basketball (1970-71) the Cougars have played the same team in back-to-back games eight different occasions. In five of the back-to-back series WSU has won both games, twice the Cougars have split and once the Cougars lost both games. The last time WSU played the same team in back-to-back games was in 2005-06, when the Cougars knocked off CSU-Northridge (65-64) at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, and again (68-55) at home in Pullman five days later.
