Dec. 26 Press Conference Quotes
Dec. 26, 2008
BERKELEY - Below are quotes from head coach Mike Montgomery from his weekly press conference with Bay Area media. The Golden Bears face Dartmouth Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by either Portland or Air Force Sunday at 2:30 or 5 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
On what he knows about Dartmouth, the Bears' opponent in tomorrow's opening round of the Golden Bear Classic (with Sunday's game against either Portland or Air Force):
Not a lot. We're going to look at film today and go over some stuff relative to all three teams as far as what things that any one of the three teams would give us a problem with, and we'll work on that specifically.
On Portland head coach Eric Reveno, who was both a player and an assistant under Montgomery at Stanford:
He's done a great job. They're running the stuff great. They know what it is they're supposed to get out of it and they run it very well. I think they've done a great job. I'm really happy for him. [At Stanford] he was tough guy, stubborn but really competitive.
On whether a possible Day 2 matchup against Portland offers anything helpful in terms of scouting a team that runs much of the same schemes that Cal does:
Yes and no, but the same goes for them too. They'll know some of our stuff. I know what it is. You're just trying to look at, of the three teams, what it is that might cause a particular problem.
On Air Force's style of play:
A lot of people are running the Princeton stuff now, so it's not quite as unique as it was. I would say the thing that makes Air Force unique with it, is they probably execute it a little bit better than most because they're disciplined kids by nature. They're not as likely to give up on it. They'll milk the clock, back-cut very precisely and set screens, and they're obviously smart kids, so they know what it is they're trying to do and what the purpose of it is.
On the areas he is most concerned about as the nonconference schedule winds down:
We've gotten concerned about our rebounding. I don't think we're a very good rebounding team. We've given up too many offensive rebounds, so we're gojing to have to back and work on block-off, because we're going to play against some big teams that will really board the ball. We're going to see some zone teams, maybe in this tournament but certainly coming up, so most of the stuff you do, you just don't want to get caught off-guard with a quick hitter or something that causes you a problem that you haven't really covered sufficiently.
On the mindset of the team coming back from the holiday in the midst of winter break:
School doesn't start for two or three weeks, so they've got plenty of extra time, but we've got to take advantage and try to utilize that time as best we can. But now it's conference right around the corner - their focus should be pretty good.
