Post Game Quotes: Portland vs Cal, Dec. 28, 2008

Dec. 28, 2008

Cal Head Coach Mike Montgomery

'The players had a little bit better mental approach coming into this game than they had the previous few. They watched the first half of last night's game, but they didn't really have the proper appreciation of Portland. Then we watched highlights of games where they beat Washington and played Oregon. They looked good. They ran their stuff. Our guys were physically and mentally ready to compete. We got off to a good start defensively. We shot the ball well. It was good to see as I feel Portland is a quality basketball team. They are big. They're strong. They're physical. It's not the kind of team we have played well against. They do a very good job rebounding the ball.'

'Given the 13 game schedule, we had a reasonable schedule. It was absent top-five and top-10 teams, but we had a reasonable tough schedule. With a new coach coming in, with a group of players who aren't heavy on seniors against that competition, I think that was a pretty good body of work. We had one stinker at Missouri, and we had a game at the Vegas tournament that I thought was a winnable game, I don't think we played well there, but the rest of the games, I thought we did what we needed to do.'

'I think five or six of our preseason games will be comparable to Conference games. We'll see more physical teams. They'll have scouted since everyone has more time to prepare now. We're going to cause some people some problems in Conference play. There are still some areas that we need to work on, and we're just going to keep working on them so that we will have a chance to compete.'

'What our three-point shooting does for us is open up the inside. You can defend three-point shooters, by and large. People need to extend to get to your three-point shooters, which opens it up for drives. We've got to have an inside game to complement that. If people elect to not guard our shooters, I think we are a good shooting team. There is no question about that.'

Portland Head Coach Eric Reveno

'It was a good tournament for us. It was a good opportunity for us to come here and play. It was a good learning experience. I thought we had a good game last night, as ugly as it might have been to some fans. Some people like to see a little more scoring. We battled, hung in there, made plays when we needed to. To bounce back today was a good test for us. A Coach Montgomery team is going to be well-coached and well-prepared. And they were. They are not going to beat themselves. We made mistakes and they made us pay for them.'
