Cougar Women Open Pac-10 with Cross-State Rival
Dec. 31, 2008
The Washington State women's basketball team (7-4) opens the Pacific-10 Conference portion of its schedule Saturday with cross-state rival Washington (4-6) in a game televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. Tip-off against the Huskies is slated for 1 p.m. at Bank of America Arena.
The match-up against Washington is the first of a three-game road trip to begin Pac-10 play for the Cougars. WSU will take on California (Jan. 8) and Stanford (Jan. 10) next week.
The Cougars are 7-15 all-time in Pacific-10 Conference openers, with their last victory coming against Oregon State, Dec. 21, 2006 (58-41) at Corvallis, Ore.
The Cougars have faced the Huskies seven times in Pac-10 openers, with four of the meetings coming on the road. WSU has defeated UW in a Pac-10 opener once, a 75-72 overtime road victory, Jan. 9, 1993.
Saturday's game will be nationally televised by Fox Sports Net. Fans can also listen to the match-up live on KQQQ 1150 AM in Pullman/Moscow, or at www.wsucougars.com. Steve Grubbs will call the game live from Seattle.
The Cougars trail Washington in the all-time series 17-57, and will be looking to end a 26-game losing streak to the Huskies, with the last win coming Feb. 25, 1995 (72-67) in Pullman. WSU has not won in Seattle since Jan. 9, 1993 (75-72 OT), a streak of 15 consecutive road losses.
FROSH ONE-TWO PUNCH
Cougar freshmen Jazmine Perkins and April Cook each currently rank in the top 10 in scoring average in the Pacific-10 Conference, the highest-scoring freshmen in the league and the only freshmen ranked in the top 10. Perkins' 14.9 points per game currently ranks fifth on the list, while Cook's 13.9 ppg ranks seventh.
WSU's seven nonconference wins in 2008 were the most by a Cougar squad since recording nine wins in nonconference during the 1995-96 season.
