Cal-Arizona Postgame Quotes
Jan. 2, 2009
BERKELEY - California head coach Mike Montgomery
On the depth showed in Cal's rotation against the Wildcats:
We've got a bunch of guys that are good players, and if you're a good basketball team, you're going to find the guy that seems to have right matchup or has the hot hand. It's important that everybody understands that, and I think this, at least for right now, validates that we can play in this league. Everybody knows that Arizona is a very quality team, and for us to be able to play with them and play that well gives us some confidence that, hey, we can play well and we can play in this league.
On the key to tonight's victory:
I asked the question in the locker room, 'Why did we win this game?' And they all agreed it was defense. We played good defense. We took the key people and made it tougher for them. Once we got the feel for what they were doing, we did a pretty good job and it led to some offensive opportunities.
On having Omondi Amoke and Harper Kamp on the court together:
Harper was a good matchup. He's really our best defensive post in a lot of ways, because he moves his feet and he understands positioning very well. That was the best matchup for us against [Jordan] Hill. We were having some problems against [Jamelle] Horne a little bit, mainly because of his activity. A lot of times we go smaller with Theo; this time we went smaller with Omondi and his activity, his energy, gave us a big lift. He moved around and he got balls, got his hands on balls, and he and Harper in the high-low was a good combination.
