Women's Basketball Falls At USC

LOS ANGELES - Talisa Rhea scored 17 points and Alex Mitchell finished with 14 but the Oregon State women's basketball team lost to USC, 78-54, Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center.

For Mitchell, it was her second straight game in double figures and ninth of the year with 10 or more points. Mitchell was 5-for-10 from the field and finished with four rebounds while making all four of her free throw attempts.

Rhea, meanwhile, hit the double-digit mark for the seventh time this season. She was also 5-for-10 from the field and knocked down two three-pointers. She also was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

She also had four rebounds for the Beavers.

Oregon State fell to 9-3 overall this season and 0-2 in Pacific-10 Conference play. USC, meanwhile, improved to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in league games.

Oregon State opened up the second half on a 13-0 run to get within 10, 44-34, at the 14:23 mark. The run eventually ended when USC's Heather Oliver made the second of two free throws with 13:31 to play. The Women of Troy, however, went on a 9-0 run for the next two minutes for a 53-34 lead at the second media timeout of the second half.

The Beavers shot 42.5 percent from the field, but managed 40 shots compared to 69 for USC. The Women of Troy, meanwhile, shot 44.9 percent from the field. USC was led by Brynn Cameron's 20 points. Oliver had 19.

Brittney Davis had eight points on the strength of five three-throw makes.

Tiffany Ducker had seven rebounds to pace the Beavers, who had 25 boards. USC, meanwhile, posted 39 rebounds, led by seven apiece from Oliver and Nadia Parker.

The Beavers shot 43.8 percent from the field in the first half, but found themselves behind USC, 44-21, entering halftime. Mitchell paced Oregon State with six first-half points on the strength of 3-for-5 shooting from the field.

Oregon State returns home Thursday to host Arizona State in the Beavers' Pacific-10 Conference opener. The game, at legendary Gill Coliseum, is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. The game will air live on KLOO 1340-AM in the Corvallis area, KKAD 1550-AM in Portland, Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com) and Yahoo! Sports.

Tickets are still available for the game against Arizona State. Reserved tickets for individual women's basketball games are $10, while general admission for adults is $7 and senior/youth is $5.
