TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona used an eclectic mix of events and swimmers to top West Virginia today at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The men won by a score of 183.5 to 140.5, while the women won 168-128.
The event lengths were altered to provide the swimmers with a different type of contest before they head into conference dual meets. 150 yard events were held in place of typical 200 yard contests and the respective schools also swum unusual 50 yard breast, back and fly events.
Leading the Arizona men today was Nicolas Nilo who won the 200 yard individual medley and 50 yard butterfly.
Other two-event winners included Bryan O’Connor who took the 100 yard backstroke and 150 freestyle with times of 1:13.93 and 49.72, respectively and Jake Tapp who won the 150 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle with times of 1:18.61 and 21.01 respectively.
For the women, Lara Jackson won the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 24.38 and 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.00. Earlier in the day, Jackson was named the Pac-10’s swimmer of the month for December.
Freshman Alyssa Anderson’s streak of at least one victory in a meet came to an end today. Anderson turned in a top time of 1:27.86 in the 150 butterfly, but the event was scored as an exhibition for Anderson due to Arizona’s point total. Anderson also placed second in the 400 individual medley behind teammate Jenny Forster.
In diving, Ainsley Oliver topped West Virginia’s Ashley Malik in the three meter dive with a score of 332.48. Oliver also won the one meter competition with a score of 301.05.
Arizona will host a conference dual meet against California on Jan. 23 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center beginning at 1 p.m.
