Jan. 13, 2009

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team has been ranked No. 21 and No. 25 in preseason polls by Rivals.com and by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), respectively.

The Bruins were tabbed No. 21 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason top-40 poll last month.

UCLA is joined by four other Pac-10 teams in the NCBWA's preseason poll. Arizona State and Stanford have been ranked No. 7 and No. 9, respectively. Following UCLA at No. 25, Arizona has been selected No. 29 and USC checks in at No. 33.

Rivals.com began unveiling its preseason top-25 poll in ascending order on Friday, Jan. 9.

The Bruins return four starting position players (Gabe Cohen, Cody Decker, Blair Dunlap and Casey Haerther) from its 2008 lineup and two of three weekend starters (junior left-hander Gavin Brooks and junior right-hander Charles Brewer).

UCLA opens its 2009 season at home with a three-game series against UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 20. Game time at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 6 p.m.
