Track & Field Opens Indoor Season On Saturday
Jan. 14, 2009
Men's and women's track and field will kick off the indoor season this Saturday at two meets with the distance runners competing at the UW Preview in Seattle, WA and the men's team heading to Flagstaff, AZ for the Lumberjack Invitational.
The men, ranked 24th in the pre-season USTFCCCA poll, are sending a large squad to Flagstaff with all event groups being represented. Vaulters, throwers, jumpers and sprinters will be the prime competitors, while a few distance runners will also be in action. This will be the first of two trips to Flagstaff for the men as they will head back on February 14 for the Northern Arizona Classic.
Last season, the men placed 14th at the NCAA Indoor meet as the distance medley relay team, Dustin DeLeo (pole vault), Boldizsar Kocsor (weight throw), Darius Savage (shot put) and John Caulfield (shot put) all earned All-American honors. Caulfield is the only All-American not returning in 2009 as he completed his eligiblity last June.
Heading to Seattle for the UW Preview will be eight women including last year's breakout distance star, Krishna Curry, and the 2008 women's cross country MVP, Katja Goldring (3000m). On the men's side, Cory Primm will open up in the 800m, Marlon Patterson and Marco Anzures will compete in the mile and a bevy of runners will compete in the 3000m, highlighted by Laef Barnes and Drew and Kyle Shackleton.
