McKenna and Hein Dominate in Day One of Freeman Memorial Championship

The Arizona State women's tennis team performed strong in Day One of the Freeman Memorial Championship. Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein earned an upset in doubles while both remain in contention in the Flight One singles bracket.
Third ranked Kelcy McKenna took down first round competitor Renata Kucerkova from Fresno State in two sets. The sophomore stud defeated Kucerkova 6-4, 7-6. McKenna went on to defeat North Carolina's Katrina Tsang 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
McKenna's fellow sophomore Micaela Hein upset No. 19 ranked Taylor Ormond. Hein blew past Ormond in two sets, winning 6-1, 6-2. Hein followed that victory up with a win in round two, defeating Jessica Nguyen of Stanford 6-2, 7-6.
Nadia Abdala earned a spot in round two with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Stanford's Courtney Clayton but lost by default in the second round.
The Sun Devils success carried over to doubles. The duo of Hein and McKenna upset No. 3 ranked Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi of Baylor 8-3. The Abdala sisters, Nadia and Laila, moved onto the second round by topping Baylor's team of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk 8-5.
The Sun Devils continue the Freeman Memorial Championship through Sunday.
