Men's Tennis Concludes First Day Of Sherwood Cup Action

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team completed its first day of play at the ninth annual Sherwood Cup today at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Two Cardinal men advanced to the third round of singles competition and all eight Stanford players in attendance will being doubles play tomorrow.
In singles first round action, sophomore Greg Hirshman defeated UCLA's Haytham Abid, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 while his classmate Alex Clayton upended UC Irvine's Steven Henderson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Bradley Klahn and senior Blake Muller were also victorious in their first matches of the day, as Klahn bested USC's Jason McNaughton, 6-4, 6-3 and Muller beat Boise State's Nick Gourley, 6-3, 6-0.
Although Klahn and Muller fell in the second round, both Clayton and Hirshman were successful in their next match. Clayton again won in straight sets, defeating the Bruins' Michael Look, 6-4, 6-2, and will face the Trojans' Steve Johnson, who defeated senior Matt Bruch in the first round, in tomorrow's third round.
Hirshman defeated USC's Andrew Kells handily, 6-1, 6-1, and will play Kells' teammate Jaak Poldma tomorrow. Both of Stanford's third round matches will be played at 11:30 a.m.
The Cardinal will begin doubles play tomorrow at 10 a.m. and all four teams are slated to face UCLA tandems.
