Wire, Muller Knock Off Nation's No. 2 Pair To Win Sherwood Cup Doubles

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Richard Wire and senior Blake Muller captured the Sherwood Cup doubles championship this afternoon with an 8-4 upset over their opponents from USC, the nation's second ranked pair, Robert Farah and Steve Johnson.

Also in the day's action, No. 33 sophomore Alex Clayton fell to Farah in the singles final. Clayton made Farah work in the first set, forcing Farah to a 12th game, but eventually lost the stanza 7-5. In the second set, Farah took control, and finished off the match with a 6-2 victory.

'This was a good tournament for us,' said head coach John Whitlinger.

Aside from Clayton, sophomore Greg Hirshman advanced to the singles quarterfinals, and three Cardinal pairs reach the doubles quarterfinals.

Stanford will now return home for a set of non-conference dual matches against Saint Mary's on January 23rd and against Sacramento State on January 27th.
