UCLA Dominates BYU, 7-0 in Men's Tennis

Jan. 22, 2009

LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis looked strong in its 2009 season opener at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Thursday, posting a 7-0 victory over Brigham Young in a match that was delayed nearly two hours due to rain.

Thursday's match marked the successful return of junior Haythem Abid, who redshirted all of last year due to a wrist injury. He won both his matches, first teaming with freshman Amit Inbar at No. 1 doubles to take an 8-6 victory over Cassidy Mears and Thomas Shubert. Abid then downed Shubert at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2.

Inbar and Matt Brooklyn, two new transfers to the team, also posted straight-set singles in their UCLA dual-match debuts. Inbar, who played No. 1 last year at the University of Maryland, was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Mears at court No. 5. Brooklyn, who was Arizona State's top player until the school dropped men's tennis, was a 6-4, 6-4, winner over Evan Urbina at court No. 2. That win exacted some revenge for the Bruin newcomer, who fell in doubles to Urbina and his partner A.J. Young, 8-7(6) at court No. 2. Brooklyn was teaming with sophomore Holden Seguso.

Michael Look turned in perhaps the most dominating singles performance of the day, losing just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Georgy Batrakov at court No. 4.

Other straight-set singles winners for UCLA included Harel Srugo and Ahmed Ismail. Like Look, Srugo was equally as impressive in his match against Roman Warias at court No. 3, as the Bruin senior proved too experienced for the BYU freshman, winning 6-0, 6-2.

Next up for UCLA is a home meeting with Boise State next Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
