Vanessa Zamarripa Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Jan. 26, 2009
Freshman Vanessa Zamarripa (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township HS) of the UCLA gymnastics team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 20-25.
Zamarripa, who was also honored last week, scored a perfect 10 on vault at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 23, becoming the first gymnast in the nation this year to record a perfect mark on vault. She performed a flawless Yurchenko layout full vault with a stuck landing to become the first UCLA gymnast to score a 10 on any event since Kristina Comforte did the same on vault in 2006, also at Cal State Fullerton. Zamarripa, who now ranks No. 1 in the nation on vault with a season average of 9.925, has won the vault in three consecutive meets. In addition to her perfect 10 on vault, she also claimed first-place honors on uneven bars in both meets this weekend, tying for first at Cal State Fullerton with a 9.85 and then scoring a career-high 9.95 against California on Sunday. She recorded a career-high 39.5 in the all-around to place second against the Golden Bears. Her scores in both meets helped her team achieve season-high team scores, and UCLA's team total of 197.125 set on Jan. 25 was the Bruins' first 197 score in two years.
This is Zamarripa's second UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
