No. 19 men, No. 15 women return to Albuquerque
Jan. 30, 2009
The No. 15 women's and No. 19 men's track and field teams will head back to Albuquerque, N.M. for the second time in as many meets as the distance, field and multi-events will see competition at the Lobo Invitational held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The meet will mark the first time this season that the distance squads have seen action and the expectation is definitely for them to come out and compete strong. Coach Harvey said at the beginning season that the distance squads could be a dark horse of sorts in determining how competitive the UA team is at the conference and national level.
Also seeing her first action in the pentathlon this week will be senior All-American Shevell Quinley. Quinley finished third national indoors last season and this meet will be her first shot to guarantee a return trip to the NCAA Championships held in College Station, Texas in March.
The top shot putter in the country will also be back in action this week in UA senior Zack Lloyd. Lloyd's impressive throw of 19.71m at the Lumberjack Invite in the team's first meet of the season has held strong through the first couple weeks of the 2009 season and Lloyd still remain nearly a meter ahead of the rest of the pack on the descending order list.
After competing in the 60-meter dash at last weekends Cherry and Silver Invite, the UA's Liz Patterson will return to her comfort zone in her return to the Land of Enchantment as she will be back in the high jump event, where she is the reigning outdoor national champion. Patterson currently holds one of the top jumps in the country after her first meet in Flagstaff and will look to improve upon that Saturday in Albuquerque.
This week's meet will be important in the scheme of national rankings as the next posted USTFCCCA rankings will be the first official rankings of the year outside of the preseason rankings. The already ranked Wildcats will look to have one more impressive showing to improve their stock in the rankings a bit.
Friday's multi-events and field events will begin at 2 p.m. while Saturday's events kick off at 9 a.m.
