No. 13 Women Impress On Day 1
Jan. 31, 2009
Two athletes on the No. 13 UA women's track and field team earned provisional qualifications on the opening day of competition at the New Mexico Lobo Invitational on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque.
Senior Shevell Quinley may not have got the victory, but her score in the pentathlon - her premier event - was good enough to earn her a provisional qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March in just her first meet of the season in the event.
The event had its fair share of drama with Quinley entering the final 800-meter event just six points behind leader Marrissa Harris of Mississippi State, the difference of a couple inches here and a couple milliseconds there in as far as the pentathlon goes. Quinley impressed in the high jump and shot put events leading up to the 800-meters, claiming the top marks among athletes and nearly setting a personal record in the high jump with her clearance of 1.75m (5-8 1/2) which was just short of her 1.75m record.
Harris remained consistent as well, winning the 60-meter hurdles and long jump events to set up the dramatic final showdown. The two kept up their consistency even in the final as they duked it out for first place with Harris coming out on top in a time of 2:34.65, just edging out Quinley's 2:34.93. Quinley finished with a score of 3,864, good enough for a provisional qualification for last year’s indoor All-American.
Also in competition Friday were the women’s pole vaulters. Junior Gabriella Duclos continued her impressive return from injury, winning the event with a mark of 4.05m (13-3 ½). This gave her her second victory in three weeks of competition.
Also having an impressive finish in the event was Jaci Perryman, who earned an indoor personal best mark with her clearance of 3.95m (12-11 ½). Not only did she earn the personal record and a third place finish, but she also added her name to the growing list of UA athletes earning provisional qualifications, becoming the fifth UA athlete to do so this indoor season.
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow for the conclusion of the Lobo Invite. Events begin at 9 a.m. and live results can be found at http://www.sml1.com/recordtiming/unm/nminvite09/.
