Evanston, Ill. - In the first ever meeting between the No. 34 University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the No. 54 Washington State University Cougars, the Golden Hurricane captured the opening doubles point then added three singles wins en route to a 4-0 victory at the National Indoor Qualifier Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center.

Tulsa jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches earning the opening point. The freshmen tandem of Elisabeth Fournier and Ioana Oprea suffered a tough loss to the hands of Alexandra Kichoutkin and Marta Marcinkowska 8-3 at No. 3. Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas found themselves in the same situation against Anastasia Erofeeva and Jie Zeng falling at the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-2.

The No. 1 doubles match between Washington State's Aleksandra Cekic and Livia Gherman and Tulsa's Thalia Diaz-Barriga and Ewa Szatkowska was not completed, but the Cougars tandem was up 7-6 when the match was abandoned.

In singles play, the Golden Hurricane widened the lead to 2-0 when Erofeeva jumped out and won the first set 6-0 then continued her strong play winning the second set 6-1 over Gomez, at No. 5.

At No. 2 singles, Tulsa's Thalia Diaz-Barriga gave the Golden Hurricane a 3-0 lead using a strong performance en route to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Oprea, before Caroline Beaulieu clinched the match at No. 6 upending Gherman 6-4, 6-3.

Three matches remained on the court and did not finish as Fournier was working on evening her match at a set each as she dropped the first set 6-4 but was in a tie 3-3 in the second. Cekic won the first set in her match 6-3 but was trailing in the second set 5-1 when it was abandoned. Nicolas lost the first set in her match 6-3 but rallied to win the second set 6-2 when play was stopped.

Washington State will look to rebound against New Mexico in the second match of the National Indoor Qualifier Sunday, at the Combe Tennis Center.
