No. 7 Cal Edges USC; Bears Tie School Record with 10th Straight Win

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Devanei Hampton scored on a layup with 2.2 seconds left and No. 7 California held off Southern California 73-71 on Saturday to tie a school record with its 10th consecutive win.
Ashley Walker had 21 points and 11 rebounds and intercepted a final desperation shot by the Trojans to help the Golden Bears remain unbeaten in the Pac-10. Cal (18-2, 9-0) is off to its best conference start in school history.
USC's Briana Gilbreath stole a pass from the Walker and scored on a fastbreak to tie the game at 71-71 with 18 seconds remaining. The Bears tried to work the ball down to Walker again on their ensuing possession but the Pac-10's leading scorer missed a short shot. Hampton rebounded Walker's miss then leaned in for a short layup to help the Bears avoid the upset.
Hampton, who missed the first three games this season recovering from offseason knee surgery, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, her second consecutive double-double.
Gilbreath scored 21 points for USC (11-9, 5-4), which pushed seventh-ranked Cal to the limit two days after losing to No. 9 Stanford by 28 points on Thursday.
