New Mexico Edges Washington State, 4-3

Evanston, Ill. - The No. 49 ranked New Mexico Lobos edged the No. 54 Washington State Cougars 4-3 at the National Indoor Qualifier Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center.

New Mexico leaped out to the early 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches earning the opening point against the Cougars. Elisabeth Fournier and Ioana Oprea picked up the lone doubles victory for Washington State. The tandem defeated Ola Abou-Zekry and Maria Sotirchos 8-6 at the No. 3 doubles position.

At No. 2, Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas suffered a tough loss to the hands of Emma Hayman and Mackenzie White, 8-4, while Aleksandra Cekic and Livia Gherman were defeated by Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva-Forte, 8-4.

In singles action the Cougars fell just short of earning the victory winning three of six singles matches. The Cougars tied the score 1-1 after Elisabeth Fournier the No. 124 ranked player used a strong performance en route to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Abou-Zekry. The Lobos regained the lead when Victoria Tessmar downed Gherman in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

At No. 4 singles, Nicolas tied the match back up for the Cougars with an impressive 7-6, 6-2 victory over Sotirchos.

The back-and-forth match continued as the Lobos took a 3-2 lead when Mackenzie White downed Aleksandra Cekic 6-2, 7-5. Oprea was able to rebound from a tough loss against Tulsa and earned an impressive three set victory over Hayman 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 pushing the Cougars back into a tie at 3-3.

It was up to Gomez and Manumea Durie to decide the match at No. 5. The three set, three hour marathon was one to remember as Durie won the first set, 7-5 before Gomez came back and won the second set 7-5. The third set was forced into a tie break where the Lobos Durie came away with the win earning the victory for New Mexico.

The Cougars will return home to take on Sacramento State Feb. 7, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
